プーバオ、本当に去るのか...中国と帰国協議開始

韓国で自然繁殖で生まれたジャイアントパンダ・プバオの帰還をめぐり、エバーランドと中国側が協議を開始した。

24日、チョン・ドンヒエバーランド動物園長は記者会見で「パンダに関する中国との協約に復帰時期は'4歳以前'となっている」とし、「プバオが3歳の誕生日を迎えた先月から中国側と復帰協議を開始したが、まだ具体的な回答は得られていない」と述べた。

協約によると、2020年7月20日に生まれたフバオは4歳になる2024年7月20日までに中国に帰国しなければならない。チョン院長は「プーバオの帰国時期は、過去にラブバオとアイバオが3月に国内に来た事例があり、5～7月はやや暑いため、3月前後の2～4月になるのではないかと慎重に予想している」と話した。

ワシントン条約によると、中国は世界のすべてのパンダを自国所有とし、海外に貸し出す方式で輸出している。プバオは2016年に韓国に来たジャイアントパンダのアイバオとラバオの間に2020年7月に生まれた。しかし、所有権は中国政府にあり、4歳になる成体になると中国に戻らなければならない。

エバーランド側はこれについて、中国内の野生動物の管理と政策を担当する「中国野生動物保護協会」とエバーランドのパンダ研究パートナーである中国の「ジャイアントパンダ保存研究センター」などと協議中だ。

この日、「パンダのおじいちゃん」で有名な江原飼育員もブリーフィングに参加した。

康飼育員は「プーバオに初めて会った時から、いつか別れることを知っていたし、プーバオのためには中国に送るのが正しいという考えで、大きく後悔はしていない」とし、「プーバオを中国に送っても忘れずに永遠に覚えている」と話した。
