Son Heung-min's Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 1-4 defeat at the hands of Chelsea FC in a match that saw two players sent off.
Tottenham were unable to protect a Dejan Kulicepski opener and were outnumbered by nine men as they suffered a 1-4 reverse in the 11th round of the 2023-2024 Premier League (PL) season against Chelsea at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, on Sunday morning (5:00 a.m. ET).
Tottenham's unbeaten run after opening the season with 10 wins and two draws came to a halt in the 12th game, their first defeat. The loss leaves Spurs in second place in the league behind Manchester City (27 points).
Son Heung-min, who started the game as the top striker, found the back of the Chelsea net on one occasion in the 13th minute, but was ruled offside after video assistant referee (VAR) review.
The bad news continued. In the 28th minute, a VAR review of a mid-range shot by Chelsea's Moises Caicedo showed that Christian Romero had fouled Enzo Fernandez and a penalty kick was awarded. Romero was also sent off.
To add insult to injury, nine minutes into the second half, Destiny Udoh was sent off for accumulated cautions for a tackle on Raheem Sterling during a Chelsea counter-attack, leaving Spurs down to nine men. Son Heung-min was isolated up front from the midway point of the game.
In the end, the 1-1 scoreline was broken by Chelsea's Nicholas Jackson's hat-trick.
After the game, soccer stats site Fourscore.com gave Son a rating of 6.4. This was his third-lowest rating of the season, behind the fifth-round match against Sheffield United (6.0) and the opening match against Brentford (6.1).
