A video of Kylian Mbappe (25, Paris Saint-Germain) wrapping his arms around Lee Kang-in (22, Mallorca) in response to a sarcastic question from a Japanese journalist has been revealed to be a fake video manipulated by artificial intelligence (AI). It was a real press conference, but it was a video of Mbappe answering questions about his contract at the Euro 2020 press conference two years ago. Instead of the player's voice asking the question, a 'fake question voice' was created and edited.
On the 15th of last month, a YouTube channel posted a video titled 'Marketing for Lee Kang-in, right? Mbappe's reaction to a Japanese reporter's question'. A Japanese journalist is heard asking in English during a press conference, "I heard that a South Korean player named Lee Kang-in is coming to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Do you think it's just a marketing move, and what do other Japanese players think?" Mbappe shakes his head.
Mbappe shakes his head and replies in French. The subtitle of the video reads, "I trust (Lee). He has the talent to come here. I don't know what the intention of the question was, but to come here means he's ready and I have to trust him as a teammate," he said. "I don't know anything about the players from your country (Japan)," the caption reads. The fake video went viral with over 11 million views, but it was later confirmed that it was a "fake" video manipulated by artificial intelligence.
It is a video of Mbappe answering questions at a Euro 2020 press conference in 2021, with the voice of a Japanese journalist at the beginning of the video, which uses text-to-speech (TTS) technology to turn sentences into speech.
Meanwhile, French professional soccer club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) appointed Luis Enrique as its new head coach on June 6. Local French media reported that PSG's top priority in the transfer market, the appointment of a manager, was expected to be followed by player signings. The announcement of Lee Kang-in's arrival at PSG is expected soon.
PSG and Lee's former club Mallorca have agreed to a transfer fee of 22 million euros (31 billion won), of which 6.2 billion won will go to Lee. Instead of receiving only 570 million won in salary when he moved from Valencia to Mallorca in 2021, the deal includes a clause that allows the player to receive 20 percent of the transfer fee if he moves to another team in the future.
