Ha-Sung Kim, 28, of the San Diego Padres, has won the Gold Glove, which is awarded to the best player at each position in Major League Baseball (MLB). It's the first time a Korean player has ever won the honor.
On the list of Gold Glove winners announced by the MLB Office of the Commissioner and Gold Glove organizer Rawlings on June 6, Kim was recognized in the utility category. The Gold Glove is awarded to the best defensive player at each position in the MLB for the year.
While he didn't win the National League Second Baseman award, which was announced first, he did win the Utility award, which was announced last, beating out Mookie Betts (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Tony Edmon (St. Louis Cardinals).
Kim played solid defense at every infield position except first base this season, including his primary position of second base, as well as third base and shortstop.
He is the second Asian player to win the Gold Glove, joining Ichiro Suzuki (Japan) of the Seattle Mariners. Ichiro won the American League (AL) outfield Gold Glove for 10 consecutive years from 2001-2010.
