South Korean tennis sensation Kwon Soon-woo (26, Dangjin City Hall) is embroiled in an attitude controversy at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.

Kwon Soon-woo competed in the second round of the men's singles tennis event at the Hangzhou Olympic Center in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, on Friday (Aug. 25). Kwon Soon-woo, ranked 112th in the world, was seeded fourth in the men's singles event and played his first match of the Asian Games after coming through the first round in straight sets. He faced unseeded Kasidit Samrej (Thailand), ranked 636th in the world, but fell 1-2 (3-6 7-5 4-6).

After a six-month layoff due to a shoulder injury in February, Kwon returned to action in August at the US Open, but lost her first six matches between then and this one.

The problem was her demeanor after the loss. After the loss was finalized, Kwon was unable to win the match and smashed her racket on the court several times. After his racket was smashed, he slammed his chair twice more, and even picked up his racket again to slam it down on the court while packing up his things.

His opponent, Samrez, even approached him to shake his hand, but Kwon ignored him. He then turned around and waved to the crowd and bowed his head in greeting.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong criticized Kwon's demeanor in an article titled "South Korean tennis player shatters racket after defeat, refuses to shake hands with opponent". "After it became clear that he had lost to an opponent ranked more than 500 places higher in the world, Kwon kept slamming his racket down on the court, shattering it," the SCMP reported, "and he did not stop afterward, hitting a chair with his racket."

The video of Kwon's behavior quickly went viral on Weibo, China's version of X. It garnered more than 6 million views. The topic has been viewed more than 6 million times on Weibo, the SCMP reported.

After failing to advance to the round of 16 in the men's singles, Kwon Soon-woo will now compete in the men's doubles, where he is paired with Hong Seong-chan (26-Sejong City Hall).

▲일본 기상청에 표기된 독도. 사진제공=서경덕 교수 The Japan Meteorological Agency has sparked controversy for labeling Dokdo as Japanese territory on a weather map of Typhoon No. 7. On the 16th, Seo Kyung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women's University, sent a protest email to the Japan Meteorological Agency through social networking services (SNS), demanding that the agency correct its mistake of labeling Dokdo as Japanese land. "The Japan Meteorological Agency has always labeled Dokdo as '竹島' (Takeshima), and we have been protesting against this for three years. The biggest problem is that many Japanese netizens visit the Japan Meteorological Agency's website during typhoon and tsunami warnings, which can create a false perception of Dokdo," he said. "In this protest email, we said, 'This is a clear territorial provocation. Dokdo is an undisputed territory of the Republic of Korea under historical, geographical, and international law." Professor Seo said that not o...
