Prosecutors at Spain's highest criminal court opened a preliminary investigation on Monday, saying they believe Rubiales' behavior could constitute a sex crime, according to AFP. "Prosecutors at the National Court have opened a preliminary investigation to examine the facts of this case, which could constitute a sex crime," the court said.
On February 20, Rubiales grabbed Hermoso's face and forcibly kissed her during the awards ceremony at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Australia-New Zealand, which concluded with Spain's victory. The incident, which occurred without the player's consent, sparked sexual misconduct allegations. Rubiales has since apologized, saying he acted with Hermoso's consent, but public opinion has worsened and calls for his resignation are mounting.
The presidents of Spain's regional soccer associations issued a statement on behalf of the Spanish Football Federation, saying, "In light of recent events and the behavior that has seriously damaged the image of Spanish football, we ask Mr. Rubiales to resign as president with immediate effect. For a new phase in the administration of Spanish football, the federation must undergo a fundamental organizational restructuring in a strategic position." The United Nations (UN) also released a statement through spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, saying that "serious sexism against women in sport remains."
As the situation spiraled out of control, reports emerged that Rubiales' mother was on a hunger strike inside a church, insisting on her son's innocence. Ángeles Bejar Rubiales' mother is reportedly on hunger strike in a church in her hometown of Motril, Andalusia, in retaliation for the investigation.
