The Japanese government may begin discharging contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
The Japanese government and TEPCO are coordinating to begin discharging contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant ("treated water" as the Japanese government calls it) into the ocean as early as 1 p.m. on the 24th, Kyodo News reported on Wednesday.
TEPCO had begun work the day before to ensure that the contaminated water was diluted as planned ahead of the first discharge. At 7:33 p.m. the previous day, about 1 tons of contaminated water was sent to a dilution facility where it was mixed with 1200 tons of seawater and placed in a large tank.
If the concentration of tritium in samples taken from the tank is confirmed to be below the discharge threshold of 1,500 becquerels per liter (㏃), and weather conditions remain favorable, the discharge of contaminated water is expected to begin as scheduled on the 24th.
